Live Stream Science and Engineering Experiences for Kids

With school closures across the globe, teacher candidates at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are bringing lessons in science and engineering design right into students’ homes.  Join us beginning Monday, March 23 every M-F from 3:00-4:00 pm Central time on Facebook live!

While students are out of school, teacher educators must get creative with ways to provide field experience opportunities. Live streams gave Dr. Nathan Dolenc, Assistant Professor of Science Education, and I the creative connection we needed to do just that. Starting Monday, March 23, we will begin at 3:00 pm CST and follow this schedule:

  • 3:00-3:15 Science Demonstration 1

  • 3:15-3:30 Science Demonstration 2

  • 3:30-3:45 Science Demonstration 3

  • 3:45-4:00 Engineering Design Challenge Launch

After these live learning experiences, children are encouraged to either sketch or build designs to meet the challenge presented in the final 15 minutes of the stream. With a parent’s help, we hope families will post pictures of designs in the comments of each stream so that we can explore the differences in our approaches and learn something from one another!

Though the term engineering is often reserved for older students and adults, we approach engineering design as a systematic process for solving problems. This definition invites even the youngest engineers to the design table! When we use the science of the natural world and of human behavior to inform our designs, we may even create our own technologies some day. For now, grab a sketchbook and pencil and join us for some science and engineering fun!
